Get Your Free Dalí DVD!
Written by Brittany Stevens
Friday, 22 May 2009 21:53

Salvador Dalí Society offers those who are interested and fascinated by all things Dalí a free DVD and a complementary color catalog!

- - -

Doorway to Dali is a collection of rare film clips pertaining to the great Surrealist; Salvador Dali. While in the Doorway to Dali you get the opportunity to see Salvador Dali pitching Alka Seltzer and Lanvin Chocolates, you also get to see the artist muse on the subjects of Science, Mathematics and Nuclear Physics.

Those whose only knowledge of Dali is from the image he presented to the media, will be surprised by his vast knowledge of science and psychology, inspirations that often found their way into his paintings.

How Dali manages to contemplate the Atomic Theory and come out with a timeless masterpiece, invoking the writings of Freud and Einstein, is explained in his own words.

In one interview from the 1950's, a young Mike Wallace manages to peel away Dali's often comical public persona and discuss the true motivation behind his works.

When Dali says "Every artist paints the Cosmology of themselves" it is as if the two have reached a common ground and mutual respect that allows Dali to shed his layers of pretense and reveal to Mr Wallace, a Salvador Dali few have ever seen.

Un Chien Andalou, Part 2
Written by Brittany Stevens
Thursday, 07 May 2009 00:00

Earlier this week, we had introduced the first part of the creative product of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí's joint effort, alongside a commentary courtesy of Michael Koller. Presenting the conclusion of the film Un Chien Andalou, we additionally supplement it with the remainder of Koller's review and analysis, which mentions another film of Buñuel's, L'Age d'Or.

This is a first film by two relatively young intellectuals and it is striking. Yet for all its critical and financial success, it never truly achieved its aim of outraging or affronting middle-class sensibilities. Although there are reports of disruptions of screenings, these seem to be based on false memories of events surrounding the release of Buñuel's next film, L'Age d'Or (1930), where the blasphemy and perversion quotient was increased. L'Age d'Or was banned, but Buñuel was disappointed by the bourgeoisie's reception of Un Chien Andalou.

Un Chien Andalou, Part 1
Written by Brittany Stevens
Tuesday, 05 May 2009 01:04

Frequently we have mentioned the cinematic collaboration between Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. Despite disclosing a vague and general depiction of the film, and the supplementary reactions and riposte from Lorca, we have yet to comprehensively anatomize the connotation of the film. For your viewing pleasure, we complement Un Chien Andalou with an interpretation and scrutiny, courtesy of Michael Koller found on the site, Senses of Cinema. Stay tuned for part two!

Un Chien Andalou was the calling card of two desperate, unknown Spanish artists. It "came from an encounter between two dreams." The script was an easy and joyful joint collaboration between Buñuel and Dalí (Buñuel would continue to write scripts in collaboration for the rest of his life), and Buñuel shot the film quickly over two weeks on a small budget supplied by his mother. Dalí later claimed to have had a greater involvement in the filming, but by all contemporaneous accounts this does not seem to have been the case.
