Exclusive Interview: Javier Beltrán
Written by Diana Fernandez and Shannon McShane
Monday, 06 October 2008 00:00

When we started this promotional blitz site, one of the first things we ever did was to contact Javier Beltrán. We consider it a privilege to get to know more of the man and the actor. Javier is simply an amazing actorand very nice individual who gave us his time and answered, to the best of his abilities, all the questions we asked of him.

The whole team salutes you!

- - -

Javier: First and foremost, I want to thank you guys for your interest in this film. Having said that, let's go by parts. I will try to answer everything as best I can. I will answer in Spanish, if you don't mind, I express myself better than in English.

Tell us about yourself: A look inside Javier growing up, a bit of background information...

Javier: My full name is Javier Beltrán Andreu and I was born in Barcelona on May 18, 1983. As far as my life, not that interesting, nothing outside the normal thing. I studied in a school in Barcelona and then started the university (degree in Humanities, also in Barcelona), at the same time I studied dramatic art in the Nancy Tuñon y Jordi Oliver actor studio. Four years at the university and another four years studying interpretation (acting).

Tell us about your family and their response to your deciding to be an actor.

Javier: As for my family, they never had any objections to my decision to be an actor. I have always had their support. The only essential condition was that I finished my university studies, and that's what I did. The four years that I have been in the actor's studio without a doubt have been the best useful years of my life so far.

It was at the end of my last year in acting school when they called me for the casting of Little Ashes. I have to thank Mercè Espelleta, the casting director for Little Ashes, for the trust she put in me since the first casting.

Tell us about your work in Little Ashes. What drew you to the role of Frederico Garcia Lorca?

Javier: Little Ashes has been an incredible experience. For a Spaniard, Lorca is one of the most important people of the 20th century, maybe even the best poet this country has had. In Spain, everybody knows who Lorca is, they know his history and his tragic end. That is why, to interpret the role of Lorca, has been a huge responsibility for me and also a great pleasure. A once in a lifetime experience that I still can't believe I'm part of. I suppose that with time, I will start realizing it. From the admiration and respect I have of Federico Garcia Lorca, I hope I made a worthy interpretation that will bring the people even closer to the poet.

How did you get into the role of Lorca? What type of research and preparation did you do?

Javier: As for my preparation for the role, I believe that everything we want to know about Lorca is in his literary work, in his poems and his theater. I also read a few biographies and interviews of his friends, like Pepín Bello and Luís Rosales. The most difficult thing when I began to study for the role was that, for a Spaniard, Lorca is almost like a myth, a legend. The responsibility to give life to a person this important man was a heavy load, but I tried to get rid of that responsibility fast. For Paul (the director) and I, the most interesting thing was to give life to a young Spanish poet who began to lead the way in the world of the Spanish culture, who is homosexual, who has his own contradictions, his problems, who falls in love, who laughs and suffers like any other person. To leave the myth aside.

What are your views on the intimacy between the characters? Was there any part of your character you found difficult to play?

Javier: As far as the relation of friendship and love between Lorca and Dalí, I cannot add further. Both maintained a relation much more than friendship. Between both existed a mutual admiration. I consider that both Phillipa, the screenwriter, and Paul, the director, have explained this relationship very well. On the other hand, it was very easy to act alongside Robert, Matthew and Marina. All three are great actors and working with them has been a pleasure.

What projects are you working on now? Do you anticipate making the transition to the U.S. in pursuit of your career?

Javier: After finalizing the filming for Little Ashes, I became a member of the cast of actors for the television series ZOO, and right now I'm rehearsing for the play, The History Boys, from Alan Bennett. That will release this October in Barcelona. As far as my future projects, I would love to be able to work in new English and American projects.

I hope I was able to answer all of your questions, again, I want to thank you for your work and support for Little Ashes.

Thank you.

A warm greeting,

Javier Beltrán
