Film and TV actor Matthew McNulty, 25, is one of England’s up-and-coming names with already more than 15 roles under his belt and shows no signs of stopping.
McNulty’s breakthrough role was as David Smith in a two-part mini-series for Granada Television called See No Evil: The Moors Murders. From there, he starred in a controversial Channel 4 film, The Mark of Cain, about two British soldiers blamed for the widespread corruption of the war in Iraq. In this role, McNulty won a joint best actor award at Rencontres International de Télévision de Reims in 2008 and an RTS North West award for best male performance in a drama or comedy in 2007.
Beyond TV, McNulty has also appeared on stage in productions such as Sexual Perversity in Chicago, The Tempest, Mikado and Grease. His film credits include Love + Hate and the award-winning biopic Control.
McNulty currently is shooting Lark Rise to Candleford for the British Broadcasting Corp. and Unforgiven for Independent Television, which can be seen in 2009.
McNulty, whose real name is Michael Anthony McNulty, started his own casting agency in 2007 called Gadbury Casting, and in March 2008 he began weekly workshops for his clients.
“I want to give people the same opportunities that I had,” McNulty said in a March 2008 interview with Bury Times. “I went to workshops in Manchester, which were quite exclusive, and they culminated in a showcase that casting directors attended.”
His own drama experience started with Laine Johnson Theatre School and the University of Reading, where he earned an honors bachelor of arts degree in film, theater and television.
Also in the Bury Times interview he said: “With my experience I know a lot of casting directors, and I can hopefully give others the platform to be seen by the right people. My aim is to bring drama and theater back to the community.”
